{"id":531,"date":"2025-10-23T13:43:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T17:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/johntilden.net\/?p=531"},"modified":"2025-10-23T13:44:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T17:44:24","slug":"the-ship-who-sang-by-anne-mccaffrey-1969","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/johntilden.net\/?p=531","title":{"rendered":"<i>The Ship Who Sang<\/i> by Anne McCaffrey (1969)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are certain &#8220;classic&#8221; books that I have just never read.\u00a0 I found a copy of this one in a library book sale in New York this past summer and read it this week.\u00a0 I hadn&#8217;t realized that this &#8220;origin&#8221; story was actually a collection of six shorter works.\u00a0 This universe posits a time when severely disabled humans, if they qualify, can live a life as the human &#8220;brains&#8221; for spaceships. (The world also posits a city-controller human brain as well.)<\/p>\n<p>This was an entertaining read and it&#8217;s aged fairly well. Except for some references to navigational &#8220;tapes&#8221; the other technology aspects still read well.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently there are two more short stories featuring the protagonist Helva, and then a follow-on series in the universe.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t feel compelled to seek them out, but if they happen to come into my hands I&#8217;d read them.
